Flow with Power: Embracing & Celebrating your Cycle with Menstrual Rituals

Guest Author: Whitney Jones

What do ancient moon ceremonies, modern self-care routines, and red tents have in common?

They all celebrate something society has long taught us to hide: menstruation.

Many menstruating women today are embracing their menstrual cycles and returning to the innate wisdom of their bodies. This means that menstrual rituals are finally coming out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

For centuries, many ancient and indigenous cultures considered menstruation a time of heightened spiritual power. They believed menstruation to be a time where the veil between the physical and spiritual realm was thinnest, allowing for heightened intuition and meaningful Divine connection. They celebrated by creating special ceremonies and rituals where women were encouraged to tap into the gift that menstruation symbolized.

Those gifts often include fertility, physical health, and a connection to Mother Nature and the spirit realm, among so many others.

Despite the beautiful attributes of menstruation, somewhere along the line, societies began to silence and shame any mention of the sacred menstrual blood (hello patriarchy!). Menstrual rituals tell us a lot about the way societies value—or dismiss—the natural rhythms of life. That’s why we’re here for the resurgence of embracing and celebrating the menstrual cycle through intentional rituals. Establishing a relationship with your sacred menstrual blood is very helpful in learning to embrace your body’s natural feminine physiology. So let’s get into it!

Keep Scrolling for some helpful rituals:

*Prior to beginning these rituals, collect your blood via a menstrual cup, disk, or directly into a jar.

A Meditative Aid

Using a beautiful jar that resonates with you, place your sacred blood on your altar. You can use it to amplify your meditation sessions by holding the jar of your menstrual blood, while setting intentions, meditating, and focusing on the power that exists within your womb. Additionally, you can have the jar lid open and use your sacred blood as an eye gazing focus point during meditation. These practices are very powerful ways to connect with yourself and the creative power that exists within your womb.

Positive Menstrual Affirmations

As we know, our words carry so much power. Speaking intentional positivity during your menstruation phase can support you in embracing and celebrating the gift of your sacred bleed time. Consistently using positive menstrual affirmations can help break habitual patterns of negative beliefs surrounding menstruation and replace them with empowering ones.

Over time, this can create long-term improvements in how you relate to your body, womb, and sacred blood.

Candle Magick

Candle magick is an ancient form of manifesting, wish fulfillment, and empowering your intentions to make them a reality and bring focus to your goals. It is even more significant when we incorporate our sacred menstrual blood.

  1. Find an unused white candle. White candles are great for invoking peace, serenity, and resoluteness about your intentions.

  2. Clear your ritual space using incense, aura spray, or anything else you’d like.

  3. Ground into your space and body with some deep breathing.

  4. Light a candle and allow it to burn until the top layer of wax has melted.

  5. This is a beautiful space to meditate, use affirmations, or do any other type of spiritual practice.

  6. Holding your menstrual blood in a jar, you can set an intention, offer gratitude, focus on what you will manifest and/or release. Feel the powerful energy of your womb’s blood.

  7. Blow out the candle, while visualizing your intention. While the wax is still melted, drop your blood into the wax and focus on your intentions and send gratitude to your powerful womb.

  8. When you’re ready, close your ritual space with a chant, prayer, or anything else that resonates for sealing your practice.

  9. Your beautiful menstrual blood will solidify into the wax. Everytime you light the candle, you will be reminded of your womb’s magickal essence.

Overall, it’s important to know that women have been honouring their menstrual cycles with rituals for centuries. These rituals help to facilitate a deeper connection with our body and womb. This often translates to feelings of positivity and acceptance of our sacred menstrual blood —a stark contrast to how menstruation is often perceived in modern society. It’s an empowering and uplifting way to embrace and celebrate the gift that is menstruation.

With love,

Whitney
